7 Spooky Hotels to Visit for a Scary Halloween

October is the month of changing leaves, harvesting pumpkins, pumpkin spice, and, of course, a celebration of all things scary, culminating in Halloween. While the ghosts worshipped on All Hollow’s Eve are mostly made up, there are many stories of genuine hauntings.

Try staying at one of these infamously haunted hotels, as confirmed by Historic Hotels of America’s Preservations Trust’s yearly survey, and peep beyond the curtain this Halloween!

1. Virginia’s Concord Colonial Hotel

In 2021, Virginia’s old Concord Colonial Hotel topped the yearly poll of haunted hotels.

The Concord is rife with ghost stories, but room 24 is the greatest spot to get a glimpse of the earth-bound ghosts wandering the inn. As early as the mid-twentieth century, guests reported witnessing grey apparitions in the chamber. Yet, the ghostly tenants do not always remain in the same room.

Visitors and employees report seeing a skinny, elderly lady and a male with a top hat in the sitting area. The ghosts of Henry David Thoreau and his loving aunt, who resided at the inn while it was a private property, are said to be the most renowned spirits on the list.

2. The Omni Homestead Resort

The Omni Homestead is America’s oldest recognized resort. The inn, which was built in 1766, has a lengthy history of ghostly activity.

A jilted bride haunts the 14th floor and is the most well-known ghost inhabitant. The groom, legend has it, succumbed to pre-wedding anxieties and abandoned his bride-to-be before the ceremony. She committed suicide because she was distraught. Her soul roams the hallways, waiting for her lover to return.

Despite its reputation as a haunted hotel, most autumn visitors aren’t looking for ghosts. Visitors seeking to witness the breathtaking splendor of a New England autumn come to the resort, so book early if you want to see ghosts this Halloween.

3. The Emily Morgan Hotel

Visitors seeking for a place to stay in the Southwest can consider the historic Emily Morgan Hotel in Downtown San Antonio. The hotel is built on the site of the Mexican barracks during the Alamo fight. Approximately 600 troops died on or near the hotel grounds.

Visitors recount a variety of paranormal occurrences. Phones ring in the middle of the night for no apparent cause, doors shut for no apparent reason, strange shadows linger in corners, and attendants uncover newly cleaned rooms in disarray.

The Emily Morgan is not the only location where ghosts may be found. Visitors often describe medical-related sightings at the site, which was formerly a medical institution reported to contain people with serious psychiatric illnesses. Some people hear hospital carts outside their doors, while others detect the unmistakable antiseptic stench of hospitals.

4. The Sayre Mansion

The Sayre Mansion is a historic Bed & Breakfast in Bethlehem, PA. The inn, which was once a private property, was converted into a bed and breakfast in 1993.

Visitors have reported feeling strange yanks on their clothes, devices turning on and off for no apparent reason, and goods disappearing only to reappear later in a new position. Others believe that the supernatural visitors are the spirits of the six Sayre children who perished in the residence. Some believe Mr. Sayre personally haunts the inn. Sayre died in 1907, and his apartment is now one of the busiest in the hotel.

With unique ghost hunting activities held throughout the year, the Sayre House embraces its eerie reputation. Visitors undertake paranormal investigations in the mansion’s most reputedly haunted chambers with Wyoming Valley Ghost Tours. The event is increasing in popularity and has limited capacity, so make your reservations early to avoid disappointment.

5. Coronado Hotel

San Diego, California, is an excellent surfing and sun vacation. So don’t be fooled by his cheerful demeanor. The Hotel del Coronado, located on one of San Diego’s most beautiful beaches, is a notorious haunted hotel.

Kate Morgan, a young lady who checked into the hotel alone in 1892, is the most well-known ghostly occupant. Employees discovered her corpse on the outdoor steps five days later, when she died from a lethal gunshot wound.

Morgan is a trickster who likes randomly moving objects, opening and shutting doors, and turning on and off TVs. Her guest room on the third level (the most desired room in the hotel – so book early!) is the most lively location. as well as the gift store on the first level.

6. The Hassayampa Inn

Over its 100-year existence, the Hassayampa Hotel in Prescott, Arizona, has hosted many notable guests. Among its prominent visitors are legendary actor Clark Gable, acclaimed artist Georgia O’Keefe, and renowned poet D.H. Lawrence.

The most infamous inhabitant, though, is one who never left. Faith Summers, according to folklore, checked in with her new husband during the hotel’s first year. Her groom went to purchase smokes and then fled, never to be seen again. Faith remained in the room for three days, anticipating his return, before committing suicide.

Legend has it that Faith is still staying at the motel. Visitors regularly see a young lady weeping at the side of a bed who quickly disappears when approached. Guests to Faith’s honeymoon suite have reported chilly spots and the lingering scent of fresh flowers, while workers have often reported seeing a lady in a pink dress wandering between rooms.

7. Crescent Hotel and Spa, 1886

With a grand ball in 1886, the Crescent Hotel and Spa in Eureka, Arkansas, broke into the high society scene. The structure has been used for a variety of purposes throughout its history, the most infamous of which was as a bogus cancer clinic. Here, the notorious Dr. Norman Baker defrauded people by offering them bogus, sometimes painful “treatment” for terminal sickness.

While tourists may see the controversial doctor in the hotel lobby, he is not the most well-known resident ghost. Theodora, a helpful ghost, arranges visitors’ closets, cleans their rooms, and folds their stuff. According to mythology, Theodora is one of the unhappy souls that died under Dr. Baker’s care and is still residing in the hotel to this day.

The Crescent Hotel attracts ghost seekers and otherworldly visitors, hosting a séance every Halloween to communicate with ghosts. America’s Most Haunted Hotel in Eureka Springs also provides ghost tours all year.
