Why Netflix won’t have a sixth season of “Queen of the South”
Queen of the South has been a surprise hit for Netflix, with people all over the world watching to see how Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga), who grew up poor, became a powerful player in a drug cartel.
In April of this year, Netflix added the most recent episodes of the USA Network show, which fans quickly watched all at once. Fans who are hoping for a Season 6 will be let down, though, because those episodes will be the last ones for the show.
Queen of the South’s new episodes first aired on USA in the summer of 2021, around the same time that the network said the show was ending.
Here’s what the network, cast, and crew of Queen of the South have said about why there won’t be a sixth season.
Why did production on Queen of the South cease?
USA said in March 2021, a month before the new episodes started airing, that Season 5 would be the last.
At the time, Frances Berwick, the chairperson of Entertainment Networks, which owns USA, said in a statement, “Queen of the South has captivated us for five amazing seasons with its great stories and bold, powerful characters.
We’re overjoyed to have had the opportunity to collaborate with such a remarkable group of producers, actors, and crew, as well as with our studio partners at 20th Television and UCP. As this last chapter comes to a close, we look forward to a great season that will end with a finale that gives our fans the ending they deserve.”
The show was a hit for USA and was still the most-watched original drama on the network when it was canceled.
So why did they decide to stop it?
Because the network is making less dramas that are made by them. When the show ended, there were only three original dramas left on the channel: Queen of the South, The Sinner, and Dirty John. The Sinner was canceled in November 2021, and a third season of Dirty John has not been planned. USA shared the original drama Chucky with Syfy in late 2021, but it hasn’t been decided yet if it will also air Season 2. This means that USA doesn’t have any original dramas left at the moment.
Netflix might decide to bring back Queen of the South. Technically, yes, but they haven’t done that yet with any USA show that has been popular with them, like Dare Me. Also, USA put an end to the show, and there has been no news of a Netflix makeover in the almost a year since the series finale aired.
Dailyn Rodriguez, who is a co-showrunner, talked to Deadline about the chance to give the show a clear ending. She stated, “As the series concluded, I felt an incredible sense of peace and beauty. I think this show can be so dark, violent, and sad on many levels, and it starts in a very sad place with what happens to Teresa in the pilot. There’s so much poetry and beauty in ending the series in this sunny, beautiful place that’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen on the show… I find that ending to be very, very satisfying on an emotional level, and I hope the audience does too.”
Netflix has Seasons 1 through 5 of Queen of the South right now.
